Chatting over the Internet can be a fun and convenient way to communicate with relatives, friends, and co-workers. Some popular applications used for Chat over the Internet are:
When running a chat program or entering an online chat room for the first time, you will be asked to choose a unique "Nickname" or "Screen Name." This is the name that people see displayed on the screen when they talk to you online.
How to Do it
When chatting online, it is important to understand a few conventions that will make the keyboard communication experience a smoother one:
- Emoticons - These are keyboard characters grouped together to resemble different facial expressions when looked at sideways:
:-) is a smile.
:-( is a frown
:-P is someone sticking his tongue out
- With a little creativity, you can create your own emoticons. You may pick up more ideas for emoticons by seeing friends or relatives use them when chatting on the Internet, or view NetLingo's extensive list at
http://www.netlingo.com/smiley.cfm.
- Etiquette - It is important to be polite, just as you would be in real life, when chatting online. TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING when you are chatting online and is generally considered to be rude.
- Identity - It is very easy for people chatting over the Internet to take on a whole new identity. Therefore, when you are chatting with someone whom you have never met in person, you should assume that they may not be truthful.
- Security - It is extremely easy to gain a false sense of security when chatting online. You can never be too careful. Sharing personal information with someone whom you have met online could result in
difficult or even dangerous circumstances.
